Netherlands Draft Standard for Entertainment Rigging Now Available

More than a year ago a group of well-known technicians from within the entertainment industry in the Netherlands joined to set up regulations and standards for the entertainment sector. They were officially supported by the NEN, the Dutch Standardisation Institute, and the Standard Committee formed two working groups. WG1 is dedicated to safety factors for Entertainment Rigging and WG2 is dedicated to electrical installations.

WG1 is the first working group to finish their draft, and this is now submitted for public review until 1st June 2005, so that all parties affected have an opportunity to participate in its development. After this date the draft will become an official Standard. The document is called NPR 8020-10 Entertainment - Rigging - Design factors for safety.

The draft regulation applies to the design and use of lifting materials, lifting equipment and constructions in permanent and temporary lifting installations within the entertainment industry. The draft is also applicable for lifting installations as they occur in public buildings according to NEN 6702, such as discotheques, exhibition centres, event halls etc. The document prescribes which safety factors should be applied for the lifting of loads for all common cases: people up or under the life load or without people up or under the life load.

Members of the Draft committee WG 1 include: Marc Hendriks, Prolyte, manufacturer; Rinus Bakker, Rhino rigs, consultant; Gert Jan Brouwer, Frontline, rigging company; Jeroen Dekker, Flashlight, user; Roy Schilderman, ARGH, association of riggers; and Monique Bosboom, NEN institute.
