Audio-Tek International Installs the Cobden Club
Built in the 1870s, the original Cobden was London's first working men's club. Now a private members' club, with a growing membership of over 1200, it has also established a reputation as a live music and showcase venue, and can be hired for private parties and hospitality events. Christian Barnes' 4SticksLive organisation stages showcase events twice a week in the club's largest space, the Victorian theatre-style Grand Hall on the top floor. Audio-Tek International has equipped this space with 2 x Turbosound QLight TQ-445DP digitally powered loudspeakers as the main FOH system, augmented by 2 x TQ-308DP units as delay satellites, with 2 x Turbosound TSW-718i sub-bass enclosures built into the front of the stage.
Turbosound TXD-12M monitor wedges were also supplied. The club's Karaoke Room, which is a small venue in its own right, leads off the Grand Hall and is equipped with a pair of Turbosound Impact 50 units, located either side of the karaoke system's large LCD screen.
Sound from the Grand Hall can be routed to the elegantly-styled restaurant area on the club's middle floor, which also features a DJ facility. This space has been configured as two separate zones, covering the Lounge Bar and dining areas respectively, with Audio-Tek installing 8 x Turbosound Impact 50T 100-volt line enclosures to provide an even distribution throughout the space. Santi Arribas, of Audio-Tek International, commented: “We designed each of the club's systems with the minimum possible number of loudspeakers, and specified models that met the requirement for products that were very compact, and which could go loud when necessary, but with no loss of clarity or quality. The various systems meet this challenge on all counts.
The TQ-445DP units - used in the Grand Hall - are especially good performers and, supported by the TQ-308DP enclosures for delay compensation, fill the theatre very successfully. We hung the TQ-445DP units on swivel mounts, so they can be turned in and lost from sight completely - this is particularly useful when the stage is being used for theatrical or film presentations.”
The recent completion of the Cobden Club's ground floor Kensal Lounge marked the culmination of the venue's 10-month refurbishment programme. Reflecting a New York-warehouse aesthetic, the Kensal Lounge's system is divided into bar and dance-floor/live-performance zones, and features 2 x Turbosound TXD-121 loudspeakers in the live zone, together with 2 x TXD-115 sub-bass units, plus 6 x TXD-081 units in the bar area, with a TSB-110 bass enclosure built into the bar seating. The live area has a small raised stage, with an adjacent DJ booth equipped with an Impact 80.2 loudspeaker for monitoring.
Guy Topping, manager of the Cobden Club, also commented on the results of the new audio installations: “As part of the refurbishment process, we had a strong requirement for better-sounding audio systems, and the success of the new installations is underlined by the 4SticksLive residency. We host an average of three live music events each week, and the feedback across all our music industry clients is that we offer good quality sound - and music industry customers should know!
The quality and flexibility of the systems is simply not an issue. Our newest facility - the Kensal Lounge - is providing us with extra scope for live performances, and the DJ dance-lounge approach is going down well with our membership. Santi Arribas worked hard to give us a good overall package, which is certainly meeting our expectations, and Turbosound's Tim McCall also put in considerable effort in researching our requirements and helping to fine-tune the brief.”
London radio station Kiss FM was among the Cobden Club's most recent customers, hiring the entire first floor restaurant and lounge bar area during this summer's Notting Hill Carnival. The carnival procession passed the club's front door, with Kiss FM running a live broadcast from the Cobden Club throughout the event.
