John Hornby Skewes to Sponsor Music for Youth
The company’s association with Music for Youth began several years ago, when it sponsored some of the Music for Youth Regional Festivals in the north of England. Since then, the company has been increasingly impressed by the work of Music for Youth in encouraging young people to take up music and, this year, took the decision to become a full sponsor of the charity.
Announcing the sponsorship, the chairman John Skewes said: “When we heard of the difficulties the charity was facing we felt that we should do everything in our power to ensure that its essential work should continue to grow. It is our pleasure to give back to this charity some of the benefits we have accrued from selling musical instruments for over 40 years.”
This is really good news for Music for Youth as, over the past five years, the charity has become ever more dependent on public funding and charitable donations to finance its essential work. The once robust commercial support for music in education and the community has changed direction, as it would appear that more and more companies are turning to high-profile, competitive events and the media coverage these bring with them. This year, after many years of enthusiastic support that enabled the charity to increase its live music-making opportunities for thousands of young people, two companies have come to the end of their sponsorship agreements with Music for Youth – Norwich Union and Halifax. Larry Westland, Executive Director of Music for Youth, aware that this would be happening, has worked tirelessly to find new sources of income to continue the charity’s vital work and is delighted that a company from the UK music industry has recognised the contribution the charity makes in developing young musicians and has decided to offer support.
