KOKO BEDA Best with Harman Pro
London’s latest major live music club KOKO picked up the Best Live Venue Award at this year’s British Dance and Entertainment (BEDA) Awards at the recent awards dinner, held in the Birmingham NEC Metropole Hotel.
The 1500 capacity venue in Camden Town features an integrated Harman Pro integrated audio reinforcement solution, incorporating JBL, Crown, BSS, and dbx brands, and providing all speaker cabinets and arrays, signal control, processing and amplification throughout. At the heart of the system is a 28 kW front of house JBL Vertec Line Array system.
Famous throughout the 1980s as The Camden Palace, the venue was reopened by the Mint Group in September last year as KOKO, after undergoing a major refurbishment, which saw the former Victorian vaudeville theatre restored to its full former glory and lavish style.
A major part of the work involved designing an integrated sound system that would provide modern standards of high power, and fidelity, throughout the entire venue. Consultants, Xtreme AV, chose to install an advanced Harman Pro system, capitalising on the connectivity of components across several Harman brands. Using JBL’s EASE acoustic modelling and Line Array calculation software, it was possible to create a solution that provided best possible audio coverage throughout an auditorium characterised by nooks and crannies, reflective surfaces, balconies and a dramatically high ceiling.
A JBL Vertec system was chosen for the main room, comprising left and right hangs each of seven VT4887 full range cabinets, and four VT4881 bass enclosures, with eight AE Series ASB6128V subs under the stage. The rig is powered by the latest Crown I–Tech I-T4000 and I-T6000 amplifiers, delivering up to 28000 watts of power, and providing up to 116 dB. I-Tech’s IQ Network provides the input stage processing for the system, and the ability to network the amplifiers enabled the system to be commissioned from a laptop.
The FOH system has recently been further augmented to provide even more power, with the addition of four SRX series SRX725 mid cabs and SRX718S subs a side; all powered with I-Tech amplification.
Outboard processing includes dbx compressors and limiters and BSS dynamic EQs. On-stage monitoring comprises JBL wedges and side fills, again with Crown amps. JBL speakers in various combinations were used throughout the various rooms and spaces off of the main auditorium, to carry the high quality reinforcement throughout al of the venue.
