Mathew Street Festival Wins Silver

The 2004 Mathew Street Festival, organised by the Liverpool Culture Company, took 'silver' in the 'Live Event' category at the Event awards, organised by trade publication Event magazine.

More than 300,000 people attended the Mathew Street Festival last year. Around 150 bands from 20 countries, from as far afield as Brazil and Japan, performed live on four outdoor stages and at more than 40 indoor venues.

Lee Forde, events general manager at the Liverpool Culture Company, said: "We have worked extremely hard at transforming the Mathew Street Festival into an event which appeals to all the family. As we head towards 2008, it is one of the city's key annual events. This award shows it is now recognised as one of the best in the country."

Highlights of the 2004 event included the luxury liner the QE2 sailing up the River Mersey, and an unsuccessful attempt by the Beatles' film foe and arch enemy of all things musical the Blue Meanie to bring the event to a halt by storming the Pier Head stage.

Jason Harborow, chief operating officer at the Liverpool Culture Company, said: "This is fabulous recognition for the Mathew Street Festival. We have made tremendous strides in taking the event to the next level by improving its quality. By 2008 it will be one of the best music festivals in the country."

A record 300 entries were received for the awards, and the city beat off stiff competition to take silver prize.
