Showsec’s Northern Soul

Showsec looked after 2,000 soul fans at the Jazz FM Northern Soul night held in Blackburn’s King George’s Hall this September, as part of the company’s long term relationship with the venue.

This was the first of six such events to run this winter to attract several generations of soul lovers, where all genres of soul music were included on the playlist across the venue’s three rooms.

Blackburn Borough Council, who own and manage King George’s Hall, brought in Showsec five years ago, to manage the safety and security for all events held in the venue. On each event, Showsec work closely with the council to create and carry out the event management plan, tailoring the stewards and event security to suit the type of entertainment and the venue’s requirements, creating bespoke crown management plans, to cover every aspect of the event’s security.

For the Northern Soul night, Showsec brought in eight SIA licensed stewards and five additional stewards to cover the entrance, ticket stalls and monitor throughout the inside of the venue. Area manager Alan Wallace oversaw the operations, with Showsec’s specialist staff working alongside the venue’s in-house team. He commented: “Working in local venues is a vital aspect of Showsec’s work. By creating smaller scale crowd management plans and assessing event security that differs greatly to the larger scale events we work on, we can offer a unique service combining a broad staff base with an understanding of the venues.”

Showsec worked with Jeff Beak, the venue and promotional manager across the event, enabling the event security to be reactive if required on the night. Jeff commented: “Showsec is an integral part of the success of any event held here, and the ability to tailor the stewards and in particular the doormen to the type of entertainment, has a really positive effect on the night. Also being able to bring in additional staff when required takes away the hassle of sourcing reliable and trustworthy stewards.”
