Skillset Initiatives

Skillset has launched a major new mentoring initiative pairing young film professionals with established industry figures such as Gurindha Chadha, Michael Kuhn, Simon Pegg and Paul Greengrass.

Guiding Lights, run for Skillset by Brighton-based training provider Lighthouse, is a year-long programme of mentoring, advice and support for 25 people in the early stages of their film careers. Mentors and mentees will be carefully matched and a personal development plan agreed with each participant. As well as having regular monthly contact, where appropriate, mentees will get the chance to shadow their mentors in the workplace.

The deadline for applications is 1pm, Tuesday 1st November 2005. For more information and to apply visit: http://www.guiding-lights.org.uk

Other training and funding schemes include an 80% discount on freelance training! Do you think media training courses are too expensive? Find out how you could receive an 80% discount from Skillset on a course of your choice http://www.skillset.org/uk/london/article_4021_1.asp.

Or are you a freelancer working in the UK film industry? You could receive up to £800 towards a training course of your choice from Skillset's Film Futures. 51 grants have now been made to film freelancers since its launch in September 2004 http://www.skillset.org/film/funding/bursaries.

Health and Safety Bursaries: if you are an eligible freelancer, Skillset can provide up to £500 towards the costs of your health and safety training or assessment! http://www.skillset.org/funding/article_1997_1.asp
