South Essex NHS Trust Recalls PSL to Stage Annual Awards

For the staging of their annual Quality Awards ceremony and theatrical entertainment, an NHS Trust has called upon the services and expertise of PSL for the fifth year in a row, taking full advantage of the "one-stop event production shop", once again project-managed by PSL's Mark Solomons.

The South Essex Partnership NHS Trust, which provides mental healthcare to its local region, hosted its annual awards show at the Towngate Theatre in Basildon. It would be hard to find a better example of a compact production, brought in on budget by a single event services supplier: PSL supplies all production design, sets, lighting and dedicated lighting designer John Montague, sound, vision mixing, a two-camera DVD shoot – even a compressed-air confetti cannon for the show finale.

Naturally the working partnership between the Trust and the PSL team has evolved over the years. Mark Solomons reports that technical expectations have remained steady, but the sets for the event have grown more ambitious as the client becomes more confident in doing the show. Set designer Oliver Stewart endeavours to keep to a very theatrical tradition, as the production features West End revue-style song and dance. "I have to balance the musical elements with the fact that it is an awards ceremony in a theatrical space," says Oliver, "and, of course, the design has to work in a multi-tiered theatre."

PSL's 2-camera shoot has been augmented by two additional cameras shooting to DV-CAM, and all material is compiled by video director Martin Reed and his engineers behind the stage using a Fulsom 3-screen vision mixer. Video is shown on-stage on two 10' x 7.5' rear projection screens, using four Barco ELM projectors, and the material will also be used for a DVD of the event. Richard Jones was in charge of mixing the sound for the show, bringing in PSL's new AKG WMS9000 radio microphone system for the lead performers and speakers.

Technical director and project manager Mark Solomons underlines the technical advantages enjoyed by the Trust: "They don't have to go to six or seven different suppliers for everything from Pixeline LED batons to lavalier microphones. Instead PSL is their one-stop shop, integrating the whole production in terms of technology and management."
