Cadac's Full House for Illegal Eagles Tour
Concert Sound is touring with the Illegal Eagles, with the PA system comprising a full house of Cadac equipment. The FOH rig comprises a S-Type live production console, complemented by a M16 remote mic amp, a D16 digital mix matrix and the new F16 DC master interface unit for FOH, with a M-Type monitor board. The tribute band's seven-week UK tour is being staged at theatres around the country, playing to typical audiences of up to 2000.
FOH engineer Tim Peeling was looking for a system with a small footprint and a quality sound, with the S-Type, D16, and F16 from Cadac sitting alongside a new speaker system from KV2, SiDD dynamics processors from XTA, AMS reverbs and TC Electronics processors.
Tim commented on the final set-up: “This band's sound majors on vocals, with most of the act involving five-part harmonies and lots of acoustic guitar. It has a huge dynamic, and needs a really natural sound reproduction, which is where the S-Type comes into its own. We were looking for a compact system that didn't compromise on quality - it's a reasonably budget-conscious tour, with five of us handling the load-in and outs, and the FOH package is an easy two-man lift. The S-Type is giving me the sound quality that you would expect from a top-end console, configured with 20 mono and 4 stereo inputs. Apart from a bit of fader control via my laptop, I run the whole show from the S-Type, with anything that I don't need fast access to on the D16 and the M16, bussed direct to the console. The toms, snare bottom, overheads and stereo keyboards all stay in the digital domain, and are controllable immediately by the S-Type's VCAs. This way I get the extra inputs I need without taking up any extra floor or truck space. The S-Type has enabled us to get the sound quality I wanted within the budget. It just sounds excellent.”
Gary Sylvester is mixing monitors for the show on the Cadac M-Type, using 6 single wedge mixes The M-Type is set up with 39 input channels and 10 outputs, of which Gary is using 8 for the band and one with a full band mix for listening. Three of the band use the same keyboard rig, and so Gary's combining three different AUXs, routing them via the M-Type's matrix with inserted graphic EQ His experience of the M-Type includes a number of summer festivals, one of which stands out in his memory: “We had a digital EQ that didn't work, and so I ended up doing seven mixes all on the M-Type itself, having scrapped the insertable EQ. It was lovely and loud, with not a squeak all day - it's a fantastic board. We all love the S-Type on this tour - it's so small and light and sounds great for a hifi gig like this!”
Concert Sound's S-Type, which was purchased earlier this year, has been on active duty throughout the summer festival season and across a wide variety of corporate events. Headline acts to date have included Franz Ferdinand's recent one-night special with Radio 1 at London's Scala, and the 2005 Lovebox Weekender festival, featuring Groove Armada, as well as a host of corporate events for Apple Macintosh, EDF, Oracle, and the Post Office.
