Harman Solution For Bristol’s Panache

Bristols’s latest, brightest nightspot Panache boasts a Harman Pro integrated audio system, that provides discrete dance floor, live performance, and ambient sound reinforcement.

The 850 capacity night club comprises a restaurant, three bar areas, dance floor and live stage area, effectively in one open plan space. The challenge facing local installation specialists CPM, was to provide the varying discrete levels of reinforcement required throughout. Well established on the Bristol night scene, Panache is CMP’s largest audio installation project to date. CMP’s Trevor Brooks, a long time fan of JBL products, elected to collaborate with Harman Pro UK in designing a system that achieved its objectives through a process of zoning control, and careful placement and focusing of speaker coverage.

Separate speaker systems were configured for stage and dance floor, but with a control and amplification system common to both, while varying levels of background music were provided for distinct bar and seating areas.

“It was excellent working with Harman on this,” says Brooks. “Not only is there a hugely dynamic product range to choose from covering the whole sound spectrum, but there’s a vast pool of knowledge and experience. They were extremely helpful in ensuring everything happened efficiently and on time.”

For the dance floor there are four JBL AM4215/95 enclosures, plus two ASB6128 subs built into the base of the DJ platform. The separate live performance system, utilised when a live act or a PA is playing, consists of an additional four JBL AM4215/95s and four SRX718 subs.

As both speaker systems are never in use at the same time, signal processing and power to each is provided from the same control and amp rack. This comprises two dbx ZonePRO 1260s, cascaded to provide 12 inputs and 12 outputs, sufficient for signal processing and control throughout the whole venue, two Crown Xs700s amplifiers for the hi-mid enclosures, and a Crown Macro-Tech MA5002 VZ, renowned for its sonic accuracy and low end performance, for the subs. Preset patches on the 'master' ZonePRO enables switching between the processing parameters for the dance floor and live speaker systems, while output from the amps is fed to a patch panel, enabling it to be routed to either system.

For the rest of the venue, including the stage left and stage right areas, the Guitar Cocktail Bar, and other bar areas, audio is distributed via JBL Control Series speakers; Control 25s, 28s and 30s. These offer a great combination of compact size and high power, ideal for delivering the background sound coverage needed. JBL Control 30 enclosures in the Guitar Bar are supplemented by a pair of Control SB210 compact subs to give a subtle boost in energy levels, differentiating it from the other areas. Power throughout is delivered by Crown amplification, a combination of Xs700, XLS 602 and XLS 202 models.

“Each speaker was individually tweaked and focussed to ensure that the different areas didn’t interfere with each other,” says Brooks. “This element of the project took time and attention to detail during the commissioning process, but all agree that it’s worked exceptionally well.”

Panache is one of several JBL installations completed by CPM in the Bristol area. Others include The Comfy Lounge, Attics & Antics and Central Chambers.
