PSL’s Momentous Feat for Medical Congress

PSL’s Momentous Feat for Medical Congress

A four-day medical congress - presented by EADV (European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology) - involving 18 separate rooms and a crew of 50 technical staff, presented main contractors PSL with an exacting challenge at ExCeL Exhibition Centre.

PSL’s project manager Stuart McLaren reports that despite the scale of the operation the event went without a hitch - from the opening marching band sequence to the closing ceremony (which previewed Rhodes as the venue for next year’s event).

The event rotates around different countries, and with England successful this year, PSL’s account manager Jon Dasent had been approached to provide the technology infrastructure by Exhibition Services. This was undertaken by Stuart McLaren and colleague Barry Denison.

As a result, the main auditorium featured 1200 delegates on ramped Steeldeck seating, facing PSL’s imaginative set and staging. Pani rear projection onto a white cyc (highlighting a graphic of St. Paul’s Cathedral and the sights of London) formed the rivetting centrepiece, while on either side two 14.5ft x 10ft screens were targeted by a pair of high-powered double-stacked Barco ELM R12 DLP projectors.

But this was just the tip of the iceberg. Two scaled down (600-capacity) auditoria (featuring Barco SLM R8 projectors) were also dressed by PSL for further discussion briefings, and four 300-capacity rooms upstairs were given a multimedia infrastructure along with 11 x 200-capacity breakout rooms.

PSL also had to equip a 25 PC-terminal Internet café and ten sensor-driven speaker support, which was networked through a LAN to all the presentation rooms.

With DVD, Beta and PC playback - and a three-camera PPU in the main auditorium — PSL provided an end-to-end digital solution (with the PA part sub-rented from SSE Hire).

“While we are used to undertaking events of this size what made this stand out was the sheer number of presentations,” Stuart McLaren confirmed. “Over the four days we handled 800 Powerpoint projections throughout the various rooms.”

And Congress manager, Emma Clayton, added: “PSL were great and the production was top drawer. We couldn’t have delivered this without the help of Stuart and Jon.”
