SSL’s Award Winning AWS 900 Installed in Three More SAE Schools
Console manufacturer Solid State Logic has delivered AWS 900 analogue workstations to the Zurich and Liverpool branches of the School of Audio Engineering, bringing the total number of AWS 900 consoles installed at SAE schools to six.
SAE ordered 10 AWS 900 consoles after recognising that this revolutionary combination of a compact world-class analogue mixing console and comprehensive DAW controller was the perfect vehicle on which to train the audio engineers of the future. The seventh console, due to be installed in Singapore, will be in place within the next month.
The SAE Institute in London was one of the first SAE branches to take delivery of an AWS 900. Carlos Lellis, Audio Head Lecturer, says: "The SSL AWS 900 is a great sounding and extremely flexible studio production tool. In our context of education it is also important because it provides the logical signal flow that we are used to from our SSL 4000G+ and Neve VR studios. With the SSL AWS 900 we are able to show our students the best of both worlds - analogue sound and console concepts, as well as its comprehensive ProTools control capabilities. The AWS 900 has become very popular with students since we installed it and it is also invaluable for future employment as more and more producers and studios begin to use it."
Since its launch in 2004, SSL’s AWS 900 Analogue Workstation has captured the imagination of music recording professionals who appreciate its combination of SuperAnalogue™ audio processing and sophisticated digital control, which make this the ideal console for workstation-based recording. Over 130 AWS 900s are now in use world-wide and the desk was recently honoured at the Tec Awards in New York where it won the Large Format Console Technology category, despite the fact that it measures in at just 57 inches.
This versatile workstation is proving popular in Iceland where Bjork’s engineer, Valgeir Sigurdsson, has installed an AWS 900 with AWSomation and Total Recall options at his privately owned Green House Studios in Reykjavik.
Sigurdsson says: “I’ve always preferred the sound of analogue consoles I wanted a desk that could also be used with my two Pro Tools systems. When the time came to replace my old desk, I investigated the AWS 900 and realised it was ideal for my purposes. Since installing it in September, I’ve already used it for 5.1 mixing and for a number of in-house recording projects. It’s very easy to operate and has been well received by everyone who has worked on it.”
Other recent AWS 900 customers include popular Taiwanese recording artist, Michael Hammar, who has installed a console in his project studio in Taiwan; Mega Studios in Paris, which has installed its second AWS 900, the ESRA audio school in Paris and Stuart McCredie, owner of The Terminal, a new studio in central Glasgow that is catering for rock and pop acts. Alongside the AWS 900, The Terminal also has an SSL 4000 G series console in its main control room.
