Barco Support Unicorn Theatre with permanent LED Artwork
Barco has announced that the new Unicorn Theatre in London features an amazing artwork by David Cotterrell, made up entirely of Barco LED. Opening on the 1st December 2005, the LED artwork will be located in the floor of the entrance lobby for all to see.
The new £13m Unicorn Theatre, the first ever purpose-built professional theatre for children in central London, will include installations by two leading contemporary artists - David Cotterrell and Martin Richman.
The Unicorn, situated behind City Hall on the south bank, will be a new cultural flagship and international centre of excellence, providing opportunity, excitement and first hand experience of live theatre to over 100,000 children a year.
David Cotterrell’s work for the theatre, Underworld, was chosen as part of the Unicorn’s three year consultation with 30 children from Tower Bridge Primary School. The children helped Unicorn choose Cotterrell’s work after interviewing a total of six artists and discussing issues surrounding public art commissioning with the Unicorn.
When describing the background to the piece, Cotterrell said: “Underworld is an alternate virtual space which meets with the physical architecture of the Unicorn through an illuminated screen. The screen is a formal addition to the building in that its shape and position reference the architectural principles of its context, but it is also a window onto another landscape.”
Underworld takes the form of an LED screen that is embedded into the floor of the Unicorn’s foyer. The imagery of Underworld is algorithmically generated, rather than animated and shows a continuously evolving urban environment. Rendered cinematically in real-time according to mathematical instruction and parameters, the cityscapes will evolve in a way that is governed by principles extracted from competing twentieth century theories of urban design and town planning. David Cotterrell’s original and creative use of the LED will give visitors to the Unicorn a real and dynamic insight into what can be achieved with Barco LED.
Placed just over one meter below the floor will be 24 tiles of Barco ILITE 6 MD, making a total area of 3.58m x 1.34m. The Barco ILITE 6 MD offers a 6 mm resolution with an unbeatable light output, colour uniformity, contrast, flexibility and seamless pictures. Due to its extremely high resolution, the LED module is well suited to form displays of 1.2 sqm and more without compromising on the resolution.
Jonathan Cooper, managing director of Barco UK stated: “The Unicorn Theatre is unique in that it is the first purpose built children’s theatre in Central London and as such we are proud to be part of such an iconic venture and especially proud to be encouraging children of all ages to appreciate modern art in the form of LED. This particular installation is very creative and to our knowledge the first time that LED has been used as a piece of permanent artwork.”
Barco also announced that its 2006 Technology Showcase for the UK market will take place at the Unicorn Theatre on the 1st and 2nd March 2006.
