PSL Provides Kitchen Sink Drama at Good Food Show

The team from PSL Lighting, led by John Montague, has been spending all its time in the kitchen at this year's Good Food Show, organised by Haymarket Exhibitions at the NEC Birmingham. PSL provided lighting for all three of the Show's main audience grandstand theatres, where celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay were hosting masterclasses for up to 1500 people at a sitting.

The largest of the three venues was The Big Kitchen, put together by production company Blacksheep, with lighting design and supply by PSL. "We had very quick turnarounds in this theatre," explains John Montague. “There was barely ten minutes to change over between the ten presentations of the day, which each lasted about 40 minutes.”

Using 12 Stage Colours and eight MAC 500’s to provide the versatility, Montague also specified 12 2k Fresnels to meet the needs of the three-camera shoot, which was supplying the giant plasma display screens, as well as a selection of uplighters, house lighting and PAR 64s for colour. Rory Mackay programmed and ran the show on a Hog2 to enable the speedy turnarounds to be achieved.

Elsewhere in the NEC, production company Xtra Perception presented the Friends for Dinner theatre, also styled as a kitchen, which could accommodate audiences of up to 1500 in grandstand seating. Lighting director Paul Lye provided the design, with PSL supplying 12 Stage Zooms and six MAC 600s.

The third of the live venues was the World of Wine and Beer, which was set up for seminar presentation to 150 people at a time. PSL designed, provided and rigged the lighting system for production company 4D Design, according to a somewhat unusual brief. “We had to light a daylight effect,” explains Montague, “providing open white lighting to combat the fluorescent lights of the exhibition hall. The objective was to make the environment as clean and clear as possible to allow the tasters who are swilling the wine around in their glasses to make their critical assessments.”

PSL's lighting team returns to the NEC and to Haymarket Exhibitions for The Clothes Show this month.
