Vaughan Sound Installations – part of the PAI Group - has completed a sound, lighting and audio visual installation in the main function room of the Hi Tide pub in Porthcawl, including the supply of LED fixtures for an audacious new ceiling lighting centrepiece.

The seafront-located Hi Tide has long been a popular spot in the Welsh seaside resort, ideally located between Cardiff and Swansea. It was originally opened as a small pub, and has expanded over the years to include an amusement arcade, a Harbour Lights Bar and lounge, a courtyard and two function rooms that are in constant use, the larger of which seats up to 250 people.

The function room recently received another aesthetic makeover from the Design Management Partnership - Cardiff based architects and interior designers who have been involved with various projects at the Hi Tide for eight years, starting with the original updating of the same space.

This latest project brief was to make it more contemporary and flexible – the room is used for anything from traditional weddings to boxing matches. To add some pizzazz, DMP’s Andrew Skinner designed an eye-catching LED lighting feature in the ceiling of the room, to liven and uplift the space and become a talking point.

The lighting feature resembles two elliptical flying saucers recessed into the ceiling, poised, ready for take off. VSI was asked to supply appropriate fixtures for the lighting feature, after working with DMP on the sound, AV and stage lighting installation in the adjacent bar earlier in the year.

VSI’s Richard Vaughan worked with i-Vision’s Dave Mackay on the lighting, specifying 130 i-Vision Lumos RGB Link to illuminate the ceiling with bold saturated colours and combinations thereof. The strips have been carefully ensconced into the inner edges of the raised ceiling, and so are virtually invisible. There are also a series of Lumos MR 16 RGB LED downlighters around the outer edges of the ceiling aperture.

The LED fittings together with an Anytronics Contractor pack dimming the house lighting are all controlled via a Sunlight controller located behind the bar with a simple to operate preset outstation.

In the centre of the ceiling feature is a fibre optic sculpture, comprising 450 of fibre optic strands lit with a starry sky illuminator, supplied by LTP from Spanish manufacturers Advance Fibre. This is used to create a twinkling night sky effect enhanced by the colour wash from the LED.

In addition to the ceiling LED fixtures, VSI also boosted the existing dancefloor lighting with four GLP Junior Scan 2 moving lights and three Lumos LED Floods to highlight the stage area.

Richard Vaughan designed, supplied and installed a distributed sound system for background music, utilising Australian Monitor Install 50 cabinet loudspeakers, powered by a T&M SA600 power amplifier and controlled by a Cloud Z4 zone mixer to operate in conjunction with the other rooms in the venue.

On the AV side, VSI supplied two 26 inch LCD positioned above the bar and a 50 inch plasma screen that can either be used for marketing or as televisions in addition to the three plasma screens in the Harbour Lights Bar.

Independent owners Geoff and Fran Dower are absolutely delighted with the results. They really appreciate how having a prominent lighting feature can change the nature, appearance and ambience of the room in seconds and work as a great mood enhancer for all occasions.

The lighting and technical upgrades coupled with other cosmetic tweaks including new glass doors and windows revealing the stunning sea views have completely transformed the space, from a darker and rather more utilitarian function room into a dynamic multi-purpose space.
