AD Systems Line Array in Reading University

The Spring Term begins in 2005 and as with most universities in the UK, with a "bit of a party" and this was to be the opening night for their new AD Systems sound installation.

If there is one place in the Students Union that gets the juices flowing it's Reading's Premier Nightclub, 3sixty. Opened in January 2001, 3sixty quickly established itself as one of the best Student Union venues in the country. Whether it's during the day or in the evening, students go there to enjoy the warm atmosphere.

As well as catering for the clubbers in the university, there have been a number of major acts making an appearance on the 3sixty stage. In the past year the Students Union have had Supergrass, Miss Dynamite, Lisa Mafia, Reef, Dannii Minogue, The Bluetones and Judge Jules!

3sixty is Reading University's main venue with a capacity of 1200 and holds events up to four times a week. The brief was to supply a sound system that met the following criteria: not to infringe on the stage or floor area, remain within the aesthetics' of the existing décor, provide a system that will cope with play back and touring bands, be cost effective and reliable and have low maintenance.

As a result, Ian MacDonald, Reading’s venue manager chose AD Systems after seeing, for the first time, their range at PLASA 2004. He was taken by the new CLA-2 Line Array and could see how 3Sixty would benefit from this innovative product. Ian went on to say that 3Sixty is an unforgiving venue where acoustic harmony is concerned and was more than pleased when he finally heard the CLA-2 Line Array in the venue.

It was decided to fly the eight CLA-2s just behind the existing lighting rig; the bass element of the system consisted of three AD-B218 cabinets which were installed under the main stage. This arrangement is unobtrusive and keeps within the brief given at the outset. The enclosures are powered by four AD Systems K-4 (2 x 1350W 4 Ohm) amplifiers and the processing is handled by an AD Systems DSC 24 digital controller.

This is the first UK University venue to use the AD Systems Line Array and has already caused a great deal of interest from other venue managers.
