Canegreen Commercial at Shockwave NME Awards
Canegreen Commercial supplied a deceptively complex sound system for the 2005 Shockwave NME Awards. The VIP audience enjoyed the Awards presentations hosted by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, live sets from Bloc Party, The Bravery, Kaiser Chiefs, Snow Patrol and Graham Coxon, topped by a set from Godlike Genius award winners New Order.
The NME awards have always prided themselves on incorporating fully live bands to entertain guests. This means the production team need to be on their toes to produce a fast moving show of the highest standard.
As the NME awards are all about music, the organisers expect a sound system that delivers high quality audio at the appropriate volume level for a rock show, whilst delivering the speech aspects of an awards show. As for the past several awards, Canegreen Commercial director Andrew Frengley was employed to design and supply the system.
Canegreen Commercial effectively supplied three different PA’s as Andrew explained: “The band performance stage was flanked by a conventional left/right system. One subtlety was dealing with guests seated within 1.5 metres of the arrays. We raised the stacks and incorporated small Meyer UPM’s above the subs to articulate the off axis power from the main Meyer MSL4’s above. It worked well, retaining full power into the bulk of the room whilst delivering quality to those in the near field.
“At 90º to that stage was the presenter’s platform; and it was crucial to get even and clear distribution throughout the room for the speeches, playback and performances on this stage. To do it we deployed a distributed system of 18 Meyer UPA1-P’s, augmented by Tannoy S300’s in the upper bar area.”
“The real complexity, but paradoxically what made the whole thing look simple, was in the line system. Effectively we took everything back from the various performance points back to one point, then re-distributed to the three front-of-house consoles, two monitor consoles and Communications control console. Utilising 128 lines, it worked to plan, and we managed the 14 minute changeovers in six minutes each time.”
“Behind the scenes communication is vital to a show of this nature. I designed a system to incorporate the OB based TV Director with the live show production team, further integrated with a fairly standard sound “shout” system working live with the sanctuary Mobiles recording OB. We used our Clear-Com dual ring system and Telex BTR800 radio coms equipment which integrates very easily, a number of two wire four wire converters, as well as six DAS-8 self powered speakers for relays to prompt, graphics and the like.
“On stage we provided a large number of floor monitors (EAW SM15’s), side fills and drum fills in a festival fashion. We also provided the after show DJ equipment.
“The third, relatively small system was in the pub next door providing show relay to guests watching screens in the bar. We also supplied all of the DJ equipment for the post awards party.”
Pete Hughes was Canegreen Commercial’s on site project manager, with Damion Dyer mixing the Awards, Roger Lindsay managing the front of house consoles, Euan Hill the Monitor boards, while Graeme Devenish and Gareth Lewis looked after the stage change-overs.
Reality was the production company for the event, and their director Paul Corrick said: “As ever, Canegreen Commercial were pleasant individuals with exceptional skills and good equipment and are great to work with. Peter Hughes, Damion Dyer and the whole team are reassuring to have on site – calm, collected and very, very good at what they do.”
