Carling Academy Brixton scooped the NME award for ‘Best Live Venue 2005 on Thursday 17th February - a category voted for by readers of the NME. To date Brixton has won this award a record ten times between 1994 and 2005!
With a capacity of 4,921 Carling Academy Brixton is a celebrated venue on the European and UK tour circuit and combines the feeling of an electrifying arena size atmosphere, with great views because of its sloping floor and incredible capabilities for production.
It attracts over 550,000 visitors per annum, hosting over 110 events in a calendar year and has played host to a diverse range of acts from Madonna, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, to the Kings Of Leon, The Killers and today’s biggest artists.
Commenting on winning the NME Award, general manager Nigel Downs says: "We're thrilled to be recognised as NME’s Best Live Venue 2005, it’s the tenth time we’ve won this prestigious award, which means such a lot to us because it’s voted for by music fans. Although Brixton has a capacity of almost 5,000, it still retains a close, intimate atmosphere and offers a totally unrivalled view of the stage for a venue of its size. The Academy's beautiful interior always makes every gig feel special; there really is nowhere quite like it.”
Built in 1929, the Academy is an exceptionally popular venue for both Artists and the public alike. The venue boasts a magnificent art deco entrance hall with two grand staircases sweeping up from the foyer. The main auditorium contains Europe's largest fixed stage, which is framed by a proscenium arch based on the design of the Rialto Bridge in Venice, where colour and plasterwork combine to produce the illusion of an auditorium, with the atmosphere of the outdoors.
