De Montfort Hall Hosts d&b's Democracy for Listeners
Not your everyday training course - the venerable Leicester's De Montfort Hall, no stranger to the famous, played host to a veritable galaxy of 60 pro-audio stars in mid January. Topics covered included sound system design presented by John Taylor from d&b audiotechnik GB, followed by a workshop day on line arrays presented by Ralf Zuleeg from d&b Germany.
"We'd been to another seminar by a US manufacturer the previous day in London," said freelance engineer Liam Halpin, "more out of curiosity than anything else - they don't do them very often. There were about 20 people there, it was really good and we got loads of pencils, T-shirts and stuff. The d&b ones are different, they are more regular, not just a one-off, but they're always good fun and you learn loads."
Besides freelancers the De Montfort seminars saw representatives from companies,
both regional and national, in attendance. "We bought a Q system at the beginning of February last year and it's only been in the warehouse ten days since then," said Ian Grove, director of Southampton based RPA. "But we still wanted to come and learn more. These guys are always thinking about different ways to use their gear to achieve even better results, especially on the set-up side. That's a real benefit for a company like mine."
Dick Hayes of Entec was similarly enthusiastic. "The effects of Q-SUBs in CSA mode are startling on paper," he said. "It was really useful to hear those predictions confirmed in a real venue by Ralf Zuleeg. We’ve already been experimenting with this configuration on tours and events, it really keeps the on-stage sound clean; monitor men love it."
"Two days filled with useful information but tempered with laughter to shake off those post Christmas blues and sharpen the ears for the new season," said organiser Emma Adamou from d&b audiotechnik. "I would like to thank all at Leicester De Montfort Hall whose contribution made this such a successful and enjoyable event.”
