Dolby Laboratories Launches Digital Cinema Mastering Facility for Europe

Dolby Laboratories has announced the launch of its new European Mastering Facility for digital cinema. The first digital film to be mastered at Dolby’s European Headquarters was Pathé’s The Magic Roundabout. This follows recent successes of the company’s US Mastering Facility, which has been mastering major Hollywood titles throughout 2004.

The new digital cinema mastering facility is fully equipped to create high quality digital movie files ready for distribution to digital cinemas. Services available include image compression, file packaging of image, audio, and subtitles in the DCI-specified open format, and advanced encryption to prevent piracy. Full quality control checks are possible in a proper cinema environment using the Dolby screening room equipped with Christie “2K” DLP Cinema projection.

“At this facility, we can create digital cinema releases flawlessly, speedily, and securely”, commented Graham Edmondson, development manager, production services group at Dolby Laboratories. “The industry has clearly called for open standards for digital cinema, so we’re delighted to be offering both mastering services and playback products that already support the DCI-specified MXF file format.”

The new version of The Magic Roundabout was released on 11th February, although the industry was recently given a sneak preview of the film using the Dolby Digital Cinema presentation system at the Empire, Leicester Square, London in early January. Also screening for the first time was the Dolby Digital Cinema trailer, which demonstrates, in dramatic images, the change from film presentation to digital presentation.

Dolby has also announced the opening of the first European evaluation site for its digital cinema presentation system. This announcement follows the news that Dolby has successfully carried out over 1,000 screenings in similar sites in the US.
