Hand Held Audio Help The Brits Run Smoothly
Hand Held Audio's busy season started early this year as the North London wireless specialists once again took on the challenge of The Brits at London’s Earl’s Court 2 on 9th February. It was their job to design and run a 60 channel wireless system which covered all aspects of the event.
Radio mics and in-ear systems were required not only for the artists on-stage, but also for the team of presenters - led by Chris Evans, who used the Sennheiser 1046 system with Neumann hand held mics. A combination of Sennheiser and Shure equipment was carefully planned and co-ordinated to cover the production specifications of the entire show.
Franz Ferdinand and Keane were among the bands using the Sennheiser G2 in ear systems, whilst multi-award winners the Scissors Sisters opted for the Sennheiser 500 series hand held radio mics. Daniel and Natasha Bedingfield, Jamelia and Lemar, The Streets and Robbie Williams and Joss Stone all chose to use Shure Premier series radio mics with Beta 58 capsules.
Radio mic guru John Fredericks was there to monitor RF conditions, liaise with artists and crew, and make sure everything ran smoothly on the night. Andrew Lillywhite, wireless expert for Sennheiser, was also on hand and confirmed that between the two of them they were able to do just that.
The event was recorded live and broadcast the following night by ITV. Hand Held Audio were also asked to supply radio mics and IFB for the Outside Broadcast production. These were used in the backstage ‘studio’ where presenter Kate Thornton captured the action and attitudes behind the scenes. The ‘red carpet’ scenario in the foyer used hand held mics to transmit directly to camera as the stars were interviewed on arrival.
The crew at Hand Held had no time to relax afterwards as the awards season required they immediately turn their attention to The Baftas.
