Harlequin Floors on the Jubilee Line

Passengers on London Underground's Jubilee Line may have been surprised to find the Rambert Dance Company performing at Canary Wharf Station and later at the Eurostar Terminal, Waterloo International on the morning of 17th January. Ensuring that the renowned contemporary dance company could perform safely on a professional quality dance floor was thanks to Harlequin Studio flooring, furnished by production company Steven Moffat Limited for Rambert's technical director, Malcolm Glanville.

Designed for extra strength, Harlequin Studio's cushioned foam backing protects against hard floors, but is still light enough to be portable for touring. It unrolls instantly and stays flat, and although the floor sections were taped and ready for use within just 45 minutes, it was decided to have separate floors at both main station venues rather than transport the floor and break the continuity of a performance that carried on between venues. Studio is a durable, dimensionally stable and hard-wearing floor that also helps to reduce noise, while offering a slip-resistant surface a perfect solution to the problem of converting an unyielding railway station platform into an impromptu dance space.

'Constant Speed' was billed as 'a specially commissioned production' with excerpts taking place at Canary Wharf, continuing by tube train to Waterloo International and concluding in the Eurostar departure concourse. According to Dance Underground, the performance celebrated the sensational opera, dance and ballet that are on offer in London in 2005. Visit London teamed up with London Underground, Eurostar and Rambert Dance Company, 'to bring a little culture to Monday morning and give a taster of what's to come in 2005'.
