VDC Helps Hillsong Church Prepare for Broadcast Future

Since the beginning of 2005, the Hillsong Church has been using the venue for its weekly services, which are held at various times throughout the day. This Christian church began life 21 years ago in Sydney, Australia and now has a global congregation of over 23,500 people. In London, where the Church has been operating for 10 years, Hillsong attracts a primarily young congregation who are drawn to its services because they are joyous, lively and contemporary. Music, provided by an eight-piece band and choir, plays an important part in the act of worship.

To ensure the success of its services, Hillsong has invested heavily in sound, lighting and audio-visual equipment, which it installs at the Dominion each week. Recently this equipment list has been boosted by the addition of a sophisticated new stagebox that was custom-built for Hillsong by VDC Trading, a company that specialises in high quality cabling solutions.

Joe Clark, Hillsong’s production manager, says: “We needed to upgrade because our old stageboxes were not very flexible and couldn’t handle the scale of services we are now dealing with. Over the next few months we hope to start broadcasting our services, so we were looking for stageboxes that could handle a broadcast feed.”

Clark turned to VDC for help and after lengthy conversations with the company’s technical department he was able to specify exactly the right piece of equipment to suit the Church’s needs. The new stagebox, which incorporates Van Damme Black Series tour grade cable, can handle up to 48 channels and provides a four-way split to front of house, monitor, broadcast and audiovisual feeds. It is fitted with VDM multipins and Sowter 8359F transformers that allow any return to be sent to any of the four destinations. By incorporating transformers, VDC were able to build a stagebox that was not only flexible but could also deliver very high quality audio – an important consideration if the church services are going to be broadcast to a wider audience.

“VDC’s technical staff were really helpful and understood exactly what we wanted,” Clark adds. “I don’t come from a sound engineering background so it was great to come across a company that had experience in this area and was able to guide me to the right solution. We’ve been using the stagebox for a couple of months now and it’s working very well. It’s also good to know that when we do decide to start broadcasting our services we will already have equipment in place that will allow us to do it.”
