Cyberhoist on the Small Screen with Joe Pasquale

Cyberhoist on the Small Screen with Joe Pasquale

The system was used on the celebrity-packed TV special (due for release in April on DVD) for the opening sequence in which the distinctively-voiced comic was flown in sitting atop a large sign spelling ‘Joe’.

Two CyberHoist intelligent hoist motors, under the control of an InMotion 3D software system operated by Vertigo’s Natascha Mason, created the move which was, ironically, deliberately designed to look like a visual gag that had gone wrong.

Vertigo Rigging project manager Marcus Exelby explains: “The stunt involved Joe sitting on this sign with his name on it, which was supposed to look as if it was being flown in manually from behind a star cloth. Then it appeared to go wrong as his feet came into shot, followed by the rest of him smiling and waving, and then suddenly the sign stopped moving and began jerking downwards and tilting until it was virtually at 45 degrees.

“Although it sounds simple, it would have been difficult to achieve with a manual system or even a conventional motion-control system, especially if it had needed to be repeated and re-shot a number of times for camera positioning, lighting effects or director’s changes.

“Using a small CyberHoist system was the perfect solution. Natascha programmed the move – including the mock ‘jerking’ and tipping motions – into InMotion 3D running on an Apple Powerbook in less than 20 minutes. She drew in the truss and put in the travel distances and speed, after which the move could have been re-run as many times as necessary with millimetre accuracy every time. In the event they got the shot on the first take."
