Meyer Sound Underground in Budapest

Budapest's Süss Fel Nap, known locally as Süss, was founded seven years ago and sits in the heart of the city. Süss's concert hall has a capacity of around 200, and it wasn't long before it became one of the most popular underground night clubs in the area, providing live music and DJ acts.

By the summer of 2004, however, Süss decided a sound system upgrade was in order. Budapest's own Chromatica Ltd was called in to discuss the situation and, after looking carefully at the venue's long half-tube shape, acoustical consultants Andor T. Fürjes and István Törzsök were brought in to help improve the hall's acoustics.

Three designs were put forward for the venue, but the final vote went for a Meyer Sound loudspeaker system for its capability to satisfy both the live music and DJ requirements.

The front-of-house system comprises two UPA-2P compact narrow coverage loudspeakers and two USW-1P compact subwoofers, augmented with a UPJ-1P compact VariO loudspeaker for delay coverage in the middle of the hall during concert use. For DJ acts, two additional UPJ-1P cabinets are added in the rear part of the room, creating a four-point system that has attracted considerable praise from visiting DJs for both its quality and sheer power.

System design and management of the installation were handled by Imre Makkay and Tamás Dóra, Süss' FOH engineer. Meyer Sound's Károly Molnár tuned the system after installation.

Since the system's installation, club owner Gyozo Szalontai has found it much easier to invite foreign acts and DJs to perform: merely mentioning the Meyer Sound loudspeaker system puts to rest any concerns about the club's quality standard.
