Surround Sound Experts Give SSL’s XLogic 5.1 Compressor Thumbs Up
Julie Gardner and Simon Heyworth, two of the UK’s premier 5.1 surround sound producers, have given Solid State Logic’s XLogic SuperAnalogue 5.1 Compressor a major vote of confidence by installing the unit in their respective studios.
Simon Heyworth, formerly a director of London-based Chop Em Out, now runs Super Audio Mastering, a comprehensively equipped mastering and re-mastering facility in Chagford, Devon. Recent stereo and surround projects that he has worked on include Brian Eno, Moby, Simple Minds, Jose Carreras, Nick Drake and many more.
Heyworth is equally delighted with his SSL XLogic SuperAnalogue 5.1 compressor and has used it to great effect on a number of SACD projects.
“This unit perfectly complements our range of analogue signal processing for Surround applications and is just what we were looking for,” he says. “It is in regular use on stereo projects and will be put through its paces in April when we start work on a couple of high profile Surround projects for major record labels.”
Gardner is the owner of Jam DVD, a London-based facility that specialises in producing live music recordings. It is completely set up to handle all aspects of DVD production under one roof, including menu design, authoring and encoding. JamDVD uses a portable live recording set-up that is taken to each venue and linked to stage microhones and separate audience mics. In the studio, the recorded audio is overdubbed, mixed in stereo and 5.1, edited and synchronised to picture. Among the many artists JamDVD has worked with are Busted, McFly, The Pretenders, Joe Jackson, Keane, Lemar, Kings of Leon, Level 42, Audio Bullys and Uriah Heep.
“I’ve always been a fan of SSL technology, having worked on SSL desks at both Townhouse and Olympic studios,” says Gardner. “The XLogic 5.1 compressor is a fantastic unit that is ideally suited to the type of work I do. It’s very versatile and very easy to use, both in 5.1 mode for surround sound projects and as a stereo unit. I haven’t had it for long, but I can already see it becoming invaluable.”
Both Gardner and Heyworth bought their XLogic 5.1 compressors through KMR Audio, exclusive UK distributor for SSL’s entire range of XLogic rack-mounted outboard equipment. Since launching XLogic at AES 2003 in October, SSL has enjoyed a very positive response, with over 800 units now sold worldwide.
