T&M Travels Through the Tron

T&M Travels Through the Tron

Situated in the City’s East End, the famous old touring theatre needed to supplement its existing house system — but in view of the number of arts spaces (including the original Victorian Bar) housed within a building whose steeple dates back to the 16th century, they also needed a rolling set-up that could be used outside.

   Sound Acoustics ended up supplying eight t&m 122 12in full-range speakers, complemented by a pair of t&m 215 (2 x 15) subs — and relevant system controller.

“We went for t&m on the recommendation of Sound Acoustics, whom we trust implicitly,” said technical manager, Malcolm Rogan. “I auditioned it using Nick Cave’s Abattoir Blues and when my general manager heard it his jaw dropped.”

The speaker system was supplied with t&m SA800 Pro 2 x 800W amplifiers.

The new set-up will not only augment musical shows staged in the 247-seat main auditorium, but also feature in the Tron’s 70-seat Studio Theatre, the Foyer (for jazz and unplugged sessions) … and occasionally the Box Office. Part of the original bi-demoninational church the Victorian Bar itself has staged every type of function — from wedding receptions to gay blessings.

Both a receiving and a production house, the Tron Theatre was established as a theatre club in 1979 (going fully public in 1989), after rising from the ashes of the destroyed Close Theatre, based at the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow.

Originally based in the Victorian Bar of the Tron whilst the Kirk itself was transformed into the auditorium, the Tron has become a leading player in Scottish theatre. It stages four productions a year — with a number transferring to the London stage — and the remainder of the time it is a receiving house.

This the latest phase of the venue’s second major upgrade, begun in 1999, with a major £5m upgrade project funded by the Scottish Arts Council, Glasgow City Council and corporate donors.
