All Bananas at d&b audiotechnik

d&b audiotechnik will not only be remembered by the visitors to their stand at PL+S in Frankfurt for their vibrant orange and apple green Qi-Series, their latest installation range of loudspeakers, but also for their rather sudden passion for bananas.

Maybe less colourful, but certainly still full of zest were d&b's successful Q-Series loudspeakers, featured alongside d&b's Remote network software and the D12 amplifier that was displayed with the latest load monitoring and system check features.

The Qi-Series loudspeakers and specialised accessories can be coloured to suit even the wildest imagination, are mechanically adapted for installation use and can be protected for climatically hostile environments. Five loudspeakers make up the Series; the Qi1, Qi7 and Qi10 passively crossed over two-way loudspeakers that share the same physical size, shape, weight and driver complement, while the Qi subwoofers are bass-reflex designs. The Qi1 HF driver is fitted with a toroidal wave-shaping device; the resulting 75 degree x 15 degree (h x v) dispersion pattern produces a curved coherent wave front allowing vertical line arrays to be constructed. The Qi7 and Qi10 loudspeakers respectively have a rotatable 75 degree x 40 degree and 110 degree x 40 degree (h x v) constant directivity horn. The Qi1, Qi7 and Qi10 individually weigh a mere 21 kg but achieve maximum output levels of 139, 138 and 137 dB SPL respectively. A Cardioid Subwoofer Array (CSA) of Qi subwoofers was also displayed. CSA is a method to increase directivity at low frequencies by turning the middle subwoofer in an array of three, or a multiple of three, backwards and selecting the CSA setting in the D12 amplifier.

The award winning D12 two-channel amplifier is specifically designed for use with d&b loudspeakers and has both analog and digital signal inputs. The D12 amplifier was displayed with the load monitoring and system check features that will be contained in the next firmware and d&b remote network software releases. These new functions will police the complete d&b system: Load monitoring immediately identifying areas within a venue that, in the event of an emergency, can no longer be addressed by the reinforcement loudspeakers, and System check that will locate and report any malfunctions that occurred during an event. The D12 amplifier was presented with the latest ROPE C remote control software and the forthcoming R10 Service software. R10 will enable multiple amplifier firmware updates over the d&b Remote network, has features for reading, saving and restoring amplifier configurations and for resetting parameters such as the user definable equalization and delay to default values. ROPE C and R10 run on PC platforms and can easily monitor and control the features of both d&b s D12 and E-PAC amplifiers.

d&b's marketing director Simon Johnston, commented: "We at d&b have had a tendency on occasions to be completely bananas, so it seemed appropriate to disclose this bent in the theme for our stand. Seriously though, we first introduced the D12 amplifier and the Q-Series loudspeakers in Germany at Pro Light+Sound last year and they have subsequently been phenomenally successful. It has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm from the visitors for this year's new offerings and feel that our labours will similarly bear fruit."
