Allen & Heath Sounds Out Short Film Festival
Allen & Heath consoles were used to provide sound reinforcement for the Sony Tropfest short film festival, which took place in Sydney at the end of February.
The annual event began 12 years ago and is now the world's largest short film festival. Held in Sydney's Domain - with live satellite links to venues in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth, Hobart and Brisbane –16 short-listed films were broadcast from a stage in the middle of the park, supported by entertainment from live bands. This year's event drew an audience of 130,000.
Event specialists 3200 Lighting employed an Allen & Heath ML5000 at FOH position - with feeds via the matrix to a satellite uplink - and a GL2200 feeding foldback to speaker monitors. This was supported by 40 Martin Wavefront cabinets powered by 30 QSC amps, with Martin digital processors providing system limiting, control and delays.
The venue was split into six audio zones, each receiving a mono signal. The three zones directly facing the screens were covered by 4 compact Line Arrays, each delivering 90 degrees of coverage. The off-screen axis zones received audio from a combination of Longthrows and standard cabinets while three banks of subwoofers were also stacked at the stage to provide enough bass reinforcement for the live crowd. The VCA sub-grouping and LCR+ capability of the ML5000 made it easier to manage the complex system.
Three video walls were suspended from a truss tower above the stage. As all three screens showed the same movie simultaneously, the audio requirement was essentially for 360 degree of coverage with patrons spread up to 300m from the stage.
