Dance Biography Wins Theatre Book Prize for 2004
The winner of the STR Theatre Book Prize for 2004 was announced on Friday 15th April at a reception at the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden which brought together publishers, writers, actors, directors, designers and other theatre workers and academics.
The judges, actor and dramatist Oliver Ford Davies, Daily Telegraph theatre critic Charles Spencer and Professor Elizabeth Schafer of the University of London’s Royal Holloway drama department spoke about the short-listed titles and some of their other favourites and the winner was then announced and the prize presented by actor Timothy West, who is the president of the Society for Theatre Research (STR).
Winner was Meredith Daneman for her biography of Margot Fonteyn, a frank and detailed study of the life of the great ballerina and her contribution to British dance theatre. It is the first time that a dance book has won the prize. Daneman, who already has a following as a novelist, is the widow of actor Paul Daneman and was herself a dancer.
