PSL Bet on Lighthouse at Aintree Festival

PSL and Betfair ensured that racegoers during the recent Aintree Festival were kept up to date with live odds by placing a giant screen in front of the two grandstands.

Betfair is the world’s leading betting exchange. It pioneered ‘exchange betting’ — a new form of bookmaking that uses internet technology to enable punters to bet at odds set by other punters, rather than the bookmaker itself. Established over four years ago and employing more than 450 people from its offices in London, Betfair provides the punter with greater value, choice and control than that of a traditional bookmaker.

The course requirement was for a low-profile screen rather than the high masted mobile units that would generally be used for this purpose. Thus PSL were asked to rig an 8m x 4.5m Lighthouse R16 16mm LED display just off the ground, in 16 x 9 aspect ratio, using truss provided by Nippy Industries.

Connected to Betfair’s server in London, the display took a continuous feed, uploading current data and advertising odds on other world events (including the US Masters Golf and Appointment of the new Pope).

Said PSL’s James Morden, who co-project managed the event with Mark Gent, “We used SDI transmission, with all signals brought in to our digital OB truck, where they were mixed and sent to the screens.” Images were fired from a Doremi hard disk and played back from two laptops — one concentrating on the Aintree Festival, including the John Smith’s Grand National, and the second on other events.

“The reason the Lighthouse screen was so ideal for this is that it meets the criteria for weight, picture quality, ease of rigging and ease of transportation. The low-profile rig proved extremely effective.”
