Sage Gateshead Raise the Roof with Stage Technologies

Stage Technologies have installed an automation control system at the Sage Gateshead performing arts centre. There was great excitement on the banks of the River Tyne when the new venue opened its doors to the public in December 2004. This stunning £70million glass and steel building, designed by Norman Foster and Partners, has been crowned 'the new home of music'.

This Sage Gateshead is made up of many individual buildings, all connected by a dramatically sweeping roof structure. The centre includes two concert halls, a rehearsal hall, a 25-room music education centre and two auditoria. The performance spaces are designed for a wide diversity of live music, from opera to pop music, making the ability to adapt the acoustics an essential element of their design. This challenging problem was resolved by the installation of moving ceiling panels.

Six acoustic ceiling panels, weighing around 12 tones each where installed and are controlled by sophisticated automation technology supplied by Stage Technologies, working with Sheffield based Street Crane Express. This modern entertainment venue has joined a league of technically advanced entertainment venues across the UK with two Stage Technologies Nomad control desks and Solo handheld controllers. In addition to the ceiling panels, the Stage Technologies' control system provides automation for three loudspeaker hoists and ceiling hatches, five lighting trusses, four point hoists for single or double purchase and the control of sixteen Chainmaster chain hoists. The Sage Gateshead's has been noted to have the best acoustic performance in the world.
