Theatre Book Prize Judges Announced

The Society for Theatre Research has announced the judges for the Theratre Book Prize for 2005. They are: Yvonne Brewster OBE, Professor Jan McDonald MA, FRSE, FRSAMD, FRSA and Sheridan Morley.

Actor and director Yvonne Brewster, who had already started The Barn, Jamaica’s first fully professional theatre company, was a founder-director of leading British black theatre company Talawa and its artistic director until 2003. She has also served on many public committees and was nominated as one of the 100 Great Black Britons.

Professor McDonald is not only Professor of Theatre Studies at the University of Glasgow but Chair of the Glasgow Citizen’s Theatre.

Sheridan Morley is theatre critic, broadcaster, writer and director - and has also appeared as an actor.

They will be considering all new books published in English on British Theatre during 2005. The winner of the 2004 Theatre Book Prize, announced last month, was Meredith Daneman’s Margot Fonteyn, her biography of the prima ballerina published by Penguin/Viking.

The Theatre Book Prize was first awarded for 1997 to celebrate the Jubilee of the Society for Theatre Research. It was created to encourage the writing and publication of books on theatre history and practice, both those which present the theatre of the past and those which record contemporary theatre for the future. It is now presented annually for a book on theatre which an independent panel of judges considers to be the best published during the year. All new works of original research first published in English are eligible except for play texts and studies of drama as literature.
