Church Invests in ‘2-for-1’ Midas Console

One of the largest Christian ministries on the south coast of England has undergone an extensive technical refurbishment of its audio facilities. John Ellis of Shuttlesound worked closely with Peter Roe of installation company Modern AV and the team at the church to come up with the right front-of-house control: a new 32-channel Midas Legend console that also operates as a foldback mixer.

The Church of Christ the King is based in a large modern building in Brighton, previously a warehouse but now home to one of the New Frontiers group of churches. The Church holds its services in a large meeting hall on the upper floor, with a view across the rooftops of the city. Regular congregations of around 900 people gather here, although there is space for perhaps another 200 worshippers.

Just two months ago, as part of a complete sound system installation by Peter Roe, the Church took delivery of its new Midas console. Live music plays a prominent role in its services, and a number of successful touring Christian music bands perform there, so technical expectations are high. After extensive discussions with Shuttlesound, the Midas distributor in the UK, the Church selected the Legend with 32 mono plus 4 stereo channels, supplied to Modern AV by Autograph Sound.

“The layout of the building didn’t provide space for a permanent monitor position,” explains Peter Roe of Modern AV. “The Legend was the only desk we could find that offered really good control of front-of-house and foldback sound. With both functions controlled by one engineer, this makes life easier in an environment that does rely on volunteers to operate the equipment.”

From the Church, engineer Simon Pask expands on this: “another reason for choosing the Legend is the number of auxes and monitor sends – also because it allows us to preserve the front-of-house EQ when we are changing the monitor mix, and vice versa. It’s virtually a separate EQ just for the monitors so you can choose to have the front of house EQ in the monitors or not, or a little. It's like having two desks. And you just get so much more transparency, the sound is much warmer than anything I've used before.”
