FX Supplies Recording Gear and Backline for Tribute
FX Rentals was recently involved in a tribute gig for legendary saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith, who died last December after an extraordinarily diverse career which spanned half a century. As well as being a long-time stalwart of the British jazz, blues and rock scene, playing with artists including Alexis Kornerıs Blues Incorporated, John Mayallıs Blues Breakers, the Graham Bond Organisation and Ginger Baker, Heckstall-Smith was also the front-man of Jon Hiseman’s Colosseum. Over the decades, his other bands included Manchild, Mainsqueeze, Big Chief and Celtic Steppes. He also gained notoriety outside the UK by supporting Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple and Bo Diddley in his various incarnations.
FX, who were also one of the evening’s sponsors, supplied a recording rig consisting of a Mackie HDR24 and SDR24 hard disk recorders in order for engineer Miles Ashton to record the gig, plus a quantity of backline equipment including a Hammond C3 and Leslie speaker cabinet, a Trace Elliot and a Fender Bassman bass rig, a Yamaha PFP250 Clavinova keyboard, DW drum kit, Mesa Boogie Mk 4 guitar combo, two Fender Twins, a Marshall stack, percussion including congas, bongos, timbales and an LA Box, and various ancillary gear.
The show, held at London’s Astoria, was organised by Don McKay from the Rhino Agency, who is the UK agent for Colosseum.
"FX Rentals were more than helpful to deal with, and didn’t bat an eyelid when I had to get a senior member of staff out of bed at one stage during the weekend," says McKay.
Guest performers taking part in the tribute included Colosseum, Gary Moore, Jack Bruce, Gary Husband, Mick Taylor, John Etheridge, Pete Brown and Big Chief.
