Projected Image Digital at The Broadcast Production Show 2005

Projected Image Digital – specialists in digital media hardware and software – will showcase several exciting new products, many of which are currently in action on a wide array of television broadcast applications.

These products all fuse elements of the ever-convergent worlds of lighting and video, offering a dynamic range of visual media from this new and cutting edge genre of technology.

Projected Image Digital is the preferred UK Partner for US manufacturer Element Labs, whose VersaTILE LED tiles transform ordinary sets and spaces into visually mesmeric environments. Walls, floors, ceilings and spaces come alive with colours, patterns and moving images. VersaTILE has recently featured on the CDUK show, the T4 Honours show and the Gizmondo launch.

Each VersaTILE is edge-lit by LEDs, giving a smooth light output. Like building blocks, tiles can be placed together in any configuration. Proven LED video display technology lets VersaTILE produce a broad spectrum of rich, saturated colours – in addition to flesh tones, browns, greys and other colours normally unachievable with conventional lighting technology. Its flexibility enables the creation of a dynamic selection of moods, from subtle and ambient to intense and pulsating.

The newest Element Labs product is VersaTUBE, which introduces an eye-catching element to any set or lighting designer’s toolbox. VersaTUBE has recently featured on the X-Factor, the CDUK show, the Gizmondo launch and can be seen in selected new high street concept stores for O2. From vibrant patterns to organic flows, the tubes come alive with ebbing streams of coloured light.

Versa TILE and Versa TUBE both use LED video display technology to produce a broad spectrum of rich, saturated colours.

PID is the exclusive UK distributor for Catalyst V3 Digital Media Servers from High End Systems. The Catalyst V3 digital media server is more powerful and versatile than ever. It provides 4 - 6 layers of streaming video playback with dual or single output options to suit varied budget applications.

Recent TV applications include CDUK, Jetset and the Eurovision Song Contest 2005, which utilised a world-record breaking 16 Catalysts!

The latest Catalyst Pro v3.2 Media Server and Catalyst Pro v3.2 software will be featured. These enable users to create new worlds of ‘virtual scenery’ with up to six layers of digital media and highly flexible, real-time rendered visual effects. There’s also now twice the impact with 2 independent signals to two outputs – effectively two media servers in one.

Catalyst XPress is a cost-effective version of the full Catalyst package. This is now available through PID as a software only purchase, opening the entire Catalyst universe to another layer of users.

PixelMAD is an Apple MAC based system enabling video playback to be input to DMX devices (e.g. lighting fixtures), dramatically reducing programming time for producing awesome, complex patterns and effects. Multiple QuickTime movies can be mixed in layers together on screen, and output as DMX which is then sent to the chosen lighting fixtures/surface.

PixelMAD software is being used to control the playback of low resolution video imagery across a massive LED surface submerged under 4ft of water in the ‘Lake of Dreams’, the showpiece of the landmark £2.7 billion Wynn Resort development in Las Vegas. The PixelMAD system controls 24 universes of DMX and 4012 Color Kinetics’ C-Splash 2 LED fixtures spread across the base of the 3 acre lake. The system gives 8 layers of digital media playback and 1:1 pixel mapping.

Projected Image Digital offers an ever-growing catalogue of thousands of royalty-free digital media clips. These are designed for use any of the above systems or a DVD player.

The show will also sees the launch of the latest digital content collections from Beacon, Amorphous and Fractured Pictures. PID also offers a custom content production service and access to over 65,000 image files.
