Vanilla is the Flavour of Denon’s DN-S1000’s

Vanilla is the Flavour of Denon’s DN-S1000’s

During his time as Bagleys co-owner, many of the world’s leading DJ’s passed through — so when he was ready to come out of his self-enforced retirement to open the 350-capacity Vanilla Bar in Windsor, he was clear what he wanted from his sound system.

“Although we are no longer DJ-led I still get a lot of top people wanting to play here because of past connections,” says Mark. “I know the calibre of DJs we will get and what they will want to play on.”

And so he passed up the rackmount twin CD option in favour of two of the individual Denon DN-S1000 tabletops, which also support MP3.

Denon were able to design this as a highly-affordable, entry-level product after first adapting the template of the award-winning DN-S5000 into the feature-rich (and keenly-priced) DN-S3000. With the DN-S1000 they have achieved their next objective — by reducing the footprint of this portable device to a mere 226mm x 92mm (inc feet) x 215mm — while still retaining advanced MP3 functionality.

Installed by Ascot Audio, the devices were a perfect fit for the booth, and Mark says the DN-S1000’s have been very well received. “You can see by the wear and tear that they are being well used as more and more DJ’s go down the CD road,” said Mark. “None of the kit in the DJ booth has let us down.” However he is comfortable in having awarded the installation contract to a local company in the event that on-site service is required in a hurry.

Describing the diminutive DN-S1000’s as “absolutely brilliant”, Ascot Audio director Paul Knight says Denon is the only tabletop brand he would consider, and rarely misses an opportunity to install them. “Everyone loves the DN-S1000 — I have never had one back, and as a concept they are so much better than the rackmount CD’s. They are extremely efficient and durable and don’t seem to have a down-side whatsoever. And as for their size I am about to put them into another bar where only they will fit the booth.”

Back at Vanilla Bar, Mark Sansom has spent around £1m fitting out an empty building on the town’s leisure strip, with a sunken fish tank in the entrance and separate Main Bar, Club Bar and luxurious LED-lit Lounge/Cocktail bar. There is always a sumptuous lounge area above the DJ console, which commands a minimum spend.

“There’s nothing of this quality around here,” he says. “We are situated in an affluent area and I’ve tried to introduce some real style to save people having to go up to the West End. All our spritis are premium brands.”

Mark had formerly run Bar Yello in the town but after 15 years in leisure hospitality decided to take a break five years ago. “I wanted to open a small bar, and although this was larger than I had intended it was too good an opportunity to miss.”
