Creative Technology at XX. World Youth Day 2005 in Cologne
The XX. World Youth Day 2005 in Cologne was an exceptional event in Germany, the highlight of which was the Pope's visit on the Marienfeld near Cologne. The event was equipped by CT Creative Technology Germany with a gigantic array of LED screens, LED trucks and the latest production and broadcast technology.
CT Germany working together with XL Video as ‘ARGE’ (as a working partnership) supplied more than 1.200 square metres of LED screens and mobile LED trucks, which were used in the city of Cologne and around it. During the entire World Youth Day 2005, the event was parallel broadcasted onto the Outdoor LED screens with a size of approx. 40 square metres each, which were set up on several different spots for the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from all over the world.
For the highlight of the World Youth Day 2005, with the Pope present on August 20 and 21 on the Marienfeld near Cologne, as many as 20 modular LED large screens and 12 mobile LED trucks were set up and technically supported. The dimensions of the LED screens were very impressive – each modular LED screen had a size of more than 40 square metres and the mobile trucks were equipped with LED screens with a size between 25 and 40 square metres. About one million visitors met on the former open-cast mining area of more than 2.5 square kilometres. They were able to experience live the ceremony with the Pope everywhere via the 32 LED screens. The two Barco OLite 510 LED screens were most impressive and could be seen again and again on TV. Each one of them had a size of more than 40 square metres surface and were hung up on frames on the right and left side of the papal hill.
Behind the scenery in the backstage area of the Marienfeld, the technicians from CT Germany were in action. Equipment from CT was used for the complete broadcast and production technology for the supporting program on Saturday afternoon, on Sunday morning and for the final program on Sunday afternoon.
During the entire broadcast time on the LED screens, four cameras and mixers were used in parallel. Chart overlays of missing persons, notes and records from the World Youth Week were broadcast from the production onto the LED screens on the Marienfeld.
For the first time, the signal transmission was realized over DVB-T by CT Germany in cooperation with the Deutsche Telekom. This way, CT Germany was responsible for the operation of the television station on the Television Tower of Cologne on channel 40 for the entire time and supplied a stable transmission of the digital signal of the television stations onto the LED screens, plasma displays and monitors on site.
While the installation on the Marienfeld was at full stretch, the use of 12 mobile LED trucks and modular LED screens, which were fully operational on several different locations during the entire week, was another technical highlight. Several LED trucks were positioned for the Pope's arrival by ship and his course across Cologne which took several hours, allowing the numerous visitors a view of the live broadcast.
The opening event of the World Youth Day in the ‘Rheinenergie’ stadium on August 16, 2005 was equipped with two modular LED screens with a total of 80 square metres by CT. They were installed on the right and left side of the stage and the signal distribution was also realized via DVB-T by CT.
The project for CT Germany started at the beginning of 2004, including the entire project management and planning concerning media technology. During this time, the team cooperated closely with the contractor Weltjugendtag GmbH and was responsible for the material, personnel and logistical coordination for the video sector, the complete video production and signal transmission via DVB-T.
