Hawk Keeps Safe Eye on Loads

The Hawk System from StrainSense Limited can be used in theatres, arenas, for temporary structures and anywhere else that overhead suspension systems occur. The Hawk System has been installed a several venues including the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham, Millennium Stadium, Cardiff and The Royal Festival Hall, London.

Hawk is used to monitor individual loading points on trusses and beams to prevent overload conditions of individual or group points. Overload prevention can significantly extend equipment life. Real time monitoring can reduce installation time as the applied loads and weight distribution can be seen as each component is added. The system can also measure underload conditions.

The system uses RS485 communications that allows measuring points to be daisy-chained together significantly reducing cabling, and improving noise immunity.

The stability of temporary structures can also be monitored using load detection at strategic points that alarm if any movement in the structure is detected. This may be due to many factors including wind loading and partial component failure.

The software is a unique design and offers many versatile features. With the PC based system, the on-screen display shows load in percentage as a simple bar graph. Each Hawk system is individually designed to meet specific needs for rigging of overstage equipment, including lighting, sound and scenery. The design philosophy incorporates safety of personnel, life of equipment and simplicity of use.
