Midas XL4 - a Decade on and Still Going Strong

Launched in the summer of 1995, the XL4 quickly established itself as the world’s favourite PA rental desk, with leading sound engineers soon refusing to use anything else. As well as its success in the touring sector, the XL4 also found numerous applications in the broadcast and fixed install markets. It was launched in an era where smaller and cheaper mixers were becoming the norm, but as other manufacturers addressed the lower end of the market, Midas designer Alex Cooper decided to make the definitive audio mixing console that was bigger, better and more expensive than anything previously designed.

The strategy paid off. Ongoing demand has ensured the XL4 has held its rental value over the years, while an infrequent appearance on the second hand market means its resale value has also remained very high. And proving its longevity, the very first XL4 - purchased by US rental company Sound Image - is currently touring with Santana.

One of the many engineers to become a firm fan of the XL4 across the decade is Metallica’s Big Mick Hughes (pictured on stand at the recent PLASA Show). “l have exclusively used the XL4 since its introduction and have never been more satisfied with the flexibility of a console,” says Big Mick. “I cannot remember one instance when l have been stuck for either an input or output. The sound of the EQ is legendary and has set benchmarks against which others have been measured. All in all a stunning piece of equipment.”
