Nexo Uses Ethersound Technology in Finnish Theatre

In Oulu, Finland, a small theatre has been equipped with an innovative surround-sound house system, based around the country's first EtherSound audio network. Designed and installed by Ari Manninen of Hedcom, the system features Nexo GEO S loudspeakers and Yamaha electronics, with Camco amplification, and Auvitran and NetCIRA processing products.

Jussi Lappalainen, the Audio Director for Oulu Polytechnic which owns the theatre, wanted a 5.1 sound system overhead in the auditorium, plus additional stage level speakers, and total and instant recall of stored digital audio control parameters. "The EtherSound solution came to mind when I studied the project plans. The equipment is more expensive, but the cost of cabling is very low. CAT5e cables, the facilities for

audio routing, and the savings in time and labour which this network offers tipped the balance."

The FOH surround sound system comprises left and right clusters each containing five GEO S805 full-range cabinets plus a S830 down-fill, and a single CD12 SubBass unit. These L and R clusters are powered by two Camco Vortex 6 amplifiers, and processed by two NEXO NX242 Digital TDcontrollers (loudspeaker processor) fitted with NXtension-ES4 Expander Cards.

The central cluster features three identically powered and processed GEO S830s. The delay system consists of NEXO PS8 compact speakers, ten in total, processed by NEXO NX242s and powered by CAMCO Vortex Q3s. A pair of PS10s, at stage-front, and an LS500 SubBass, at stage-rear, complete the stage-level system.

FOH control features a Yamaha DM2000 fitted with an Auvitran AVY16-ES

card that routes 16 digital outputs to a Yamaha DME64 digital mix engine fitted with 2x AVY16-ES cards. DME64 EtherSound card #1 feeds an Ethernet switch connected to a NEXO NX242 fitted with a Nexo NXtension-ES4 (EtherSound) expander card. An 8-channel NetCIRA/EtherSound SO2 D/A output card is also connected to this switch to route analogue signal, to the 5.1 system amplifiers plus the delayed side and rear auditorium speaker systems. Output from DME64 EtherSound card #2 is daisy-chained to the NX242 processors used at stage level. Another NetCIRA/EtherSound SO2 D/A conversion module completes the stage level system.

After the inevitable learning curve, the system installation turned out to be a smooth process. "For an audio technician who has never used a network in his life, configuring an IP address is still something new and intimidating," continues Jussi Lappalainen. "At the beginning, every small problem we encountered seemed to be a disaster. But with minimal introduction to and awareness of the rules to be followed, configuring the network was achieved without any problems."
