PALCOs from Lightfactor on Spandex
Lightfactor Sales has sold SGM PALCO colour changing LED luminaires to Bristol-based lighting rental company, Fineline.
Fineline’s Darren Wring first trialled the Palcos on a corporate job at the NEC in Birmingham for Spandex, after which he was so impressed he decided to invest in the units. These went straight out again on another show for Spandex in Amsterdam.
The new Spandex exhibition stand’s design and lighting design is by Wring – they are a long-term client - and was built by James Thomas Engineering. It’s an impressive 12 metres wide by 16 metres long, and the whole stand spins round in a circle, and is animated by both movement and changing colours.
This year, Spandex wanted all their graphics and display panels to be in black and white, with the only colour to be introduced to the stand by lighting. Wring thought this was the ideal time to test out some Palcos, which he’d had his eye on for some time.
The lighting effects produced by the Palcos at the Birmingham event were so successful and the client liked the fixtures so much that he went ahead and purchased them. Spandex are now insisting that the PALCOs are on all their future exhibition projects.
Lightfactor’s Peter Coles completed the deal with Fineline. “It’s great to see companies like Fineline investing in LED technology, and we’re really pleased that Darren chose the PALCO as his first LED wash fixtures. It’s generally been an excellent year for the PALCO so far,” he said.
Palco is designed for both indoor and outdoor use (outdoor units are IP65 rated). It uses high-powered Luxeon LEDs as the light source with RGB colour mixing of 5 blue, 20 green and 24 red emitters. It offers all the advantages of LED lighting - including the generation of ‘cold’ IR and UV-free light that doesn’t heat illuminated objects; a life of approximately 100,000 hours at full power and reduced electricity consumption compared to traditional incandescent lightsources. The fixtures are also very low maintenance.
“I love them …they are ideal for cyc and set lighting” enthuses Wring, adding that apart from being highly convenient to use, PALCOs’ streamlined flat-fronted profile allows them to blend unobtrusively into any set. “They are just absolutely brilliant.”
The Palcos on the Spandex stand are run in master/slave mode, so they talk to each other, and are set on a slow colour roll. The same Spandex stand travels to about six large corporate trade shows a year all around the world.
Fineline has also used its first Palcos to light a variety of other projects including bands, theatre productions and corporate events. The features Wring likes best are the excellent and very bright light output and their cost saving implications. He states: “Corporate clients love them because they are so elegantly designed and because they draw so little power. Possibly the biggest advantage is that I can save the client the cost of the entire hire - and more - by using them because of the reduced electricity spec needed for a show or exhibition.”
