Robe for the High Jump

Robe ColorWash and ColorSpot 1200E AT fixtures were specified and used by lighting designer Mirash Lekaj for the ‘Jump’ Broadway finale staged in the Manhattan Studio at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.

This is the latest in a series of high profile theatrical productions for which Robe products are increasingly finding favour – chosen for their near-silent operation, fast movement and impressive brightness.

Break The Floor Productions’ Jump - is one of the youngest and most innovative dance teaching faculties in America. Led by Gil Stroming, it combines live rock and hip-hop music with the precise rhythms and techniques of tap, jazz, ballet and modern in a new and exciting mix of the two cultures, connecting with a new generation of dancers.

The Jump Broadway finale was the culmination of a regional tour that encouraged and inspired thousands of aspiring performers to dance and rehearse with leading artists, all with a fresh perspective on the world of dance. The finale enabled all registered dancers to perform with some of America’s leading choreographers, including judges from Fox’s hit TV show ‘So You Think You Can Dance’.

Lighting for this phenomenally popular concept show was supplied by New Jersey based Circuit Lighting, a leading production company and rental house. Circuit has worked with Break The Floor Productions on all their pervious projects for the past two years, including other dance competitions and video shoots.

Lekaj is one of Circuit’s regular designers, and his brief was to come up with something special for the finale. The stage was an imposing 72 ft wide by 40 ft deep, so he knew he needed plenty of coverage and the powerful Robe 1200 AT range was an obvious choice. He also wanted to cut down on the number of conventionals and use more automated fixtures, so he knew he needed a very dynamic unit, and once again Robe was the perfect partner.

The rig utilized a total of 18 ColorWash 1200E ATs and 16 ColorSpot 1200E ATs. These were placed on the upstage trusses, the mid stage “X” truss, downstage, and at front of house to produce dramatic beam and gobo effects, both on stage and in the house where some numbers were performed.

Other fixtures on the rig included 90 Source Four PARs and 24 Source Four Ellipsoidals for front light. Lighting was run by Lekaj using an Avolites Pearl console.
