Marquee Supply Top Rock ‘n’ Roll Spec to Nigeria – in Near-Record Time

Marquee Audio has supplied a full, integrated concert touring package to a client in Nigeria.

Via two of the manufacturers that they represent, the Shepperton-based dealers and distributors were approached by Senator Daniel Aluko of Associated Logistics, one of the country’s leading polticians.

He explained the requirement for a full front-of-house and monitor system in the south of the country, where the Governor of Calabar, Donald Duke, was a real music buff.

Explained Marquee Audio’s Andy Huffer: “They had been promoting a lot of concerts and festivals in the region but it was costing them a fortune hiring the equipment in — and they realised it would be more economical to purchase their own rig.”

Marquee’s sales director designed a proprietary system based around a Turbosound Aspect rig and Yamaha PM5000 analogue mixer — but there was a sting in the tail.

“There was a near impossible timescale, as everything had to be landed in time for a gig by reggae artist ‘Joe’ on December 17. After I had finalised the spec and the order had been placed, we only had three weeks to turn it round.”

Providing the hardware was one thing — but the design of the cabling infrastructure would routinely have taken a good deal longer. To the rescue came VDC Trading (as they have so many times in the past) working tirelessly to produce stage boxes, custom looms, returns, multicores and desk patching — all on standard VDM multipin connectors.

“We chose VDC because we knew we could rely on their accuracy and their ability to build a rock ’n’ roll system inside the timeframe,” said the Marquee man. “We have been working with Dug Guthrie for years and I knew we could rely on his intuition and ability to second guess what I would be looking for. Since this included some cabling infrastructure for the Turbosound Aspect system, they already knew the pin configuration and layout.”

As a result, says Huffer, the region of Calabar undoubtedly has the best cabling and PA system anyone has seen inside Nigeria.
