High Activity for Unusual

High Activity for Unusual

A manic month in September saw four main strands of Unusual's rigging markets going at full steam.

From an engineering installation perspective, Simon Tiernan led the way with the new 53-set double purchase counterweight flying system at The Theatre Royal, Newcastle. As with so many complex building projects, Unusual had to work around others on an eight-week installation programme to ensure that deadlines are met and the theatre can re-open with Grease on October 17th.

At the other end of the country, Unusual's in-house rigging team at Earls Court had the seasonal swell of larger shows to deal with including PLASA, 100% Design and 'One Night Only' - a special Armani fashion show in The Brompton Hall which was screened on Channel 4 Wednesday 27th September.

The breadth of rigging work undertaken by Unusual was well illustrated with a Vauxhall Corsa car launch at Milbrook, a 20 man team on the Paris Motor Show for Imagination and an extraordinary arts project called 'Margate Exodus', where Unusual realised an Anthony Gormley creation. 'Waste Man' was an 85 foot high sculpture of a man made entirely of waste. Part of a Channel 4 film and documentary, the sculpture was burnt down on Saturday 30th September.

In the theatre business, the weekend of September 9th/10th saw four touring show moves. Starlight Express went from Eastbourne to Southend, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang from Birmingham to Liverpool, Cats loaded into Porto and Mamma Mia! out of Pretoria. In the West End, Unusual started work on the installation of The Sound of Music at The Palladium and Porgy and Bess has started the fit up at The Savoy.

Behind the scenes, Unusual welcome the much needed addition to their design team in Young Ho Seo from Bath University. Testament to the fact that Unusual's premises are as empty as they have ever been is the fact that the operations, warehouse and workshop staff have been working flat out to ensure that all of the project teams are fully resourced to carry out their tasks.
