Maastricht University Upgrades to ZonePRO 1261

dbx Professional Products, the Salt Lake City-based manufacturer of professional signal processing products and a division of Harman International, has won a contract to install 20 of its ZonePRO 1261’s at the Universiteit Maastricht in Holland.

Media Service Maastricht bv has an association with the Universiteit extending back 28 years. For the first 20 of these they functioned as the uni’s internal services provider — its audio-visual department. However, eight years ago the company decided to break into the open market, retaining the University as a client.

This summer they were called back by to upgrade the A/V facilities and routing in 20 of the University’s lecture theatres. The company wasted little time in overturning the original DSP specification, having been alerted to the flexibility (and RoHS compliance) of the dbx ZonePRO 1261 digital zone processor by Edwin Korthoff, from Dutch distributors AudioXL.

Operating under AMX master control the ZonePRO 1261 offers flexible routing, with a capacity for 12 inputs and six outputs — each output zone configured with either a mixer or a router.

At the Universiteit Maastricht the system takes data feeds from a laptop/PC and mic inputs in each theatre, with further line inputs from a number of devices including DVD and CD. Level control presets are stored in the ZonePRO along with compression and basic EQ.

Said Media Service Maastricht’s project manager, Bart Hermens: “Aside from being eco-friendly, using a ZonePRO in each of the 20 rooms gives us many advantages — mainly superior dynamic processing and flexible signal routing. They are driving proprietary sound reinforcement systems and the quality of signal and level of intelligibility is something the University has not experienced before.”

dbx processing forms part of a general upgrade which has seen each of the theatres equipped with front screen projection and dynamic whiteboards, with all the necessary matrix routers, format scalers and converters.
