Utopian Leisure & Blaydon Communications Choose KV2 Audio
When, in December 2005 Utopian Leisure purchased two Newcastle bars, Sam Jacks adjacent to The Gate Leisure Centre and Bar 55, which is in a predominant position at the end of Mosley Street in the 55° North complex, they knew that both venues would need considerable refurbishment.
Sam Jacks was upgraded to include a dance area complete with a new lighting system, enhancements and additions to the visuals, with the installation of three new projectors, and upgrades to the Plasma and LCD displays. Utopian’s operations manager Carl Hornsby commented: “We must have the greatest number of display units in any Newcastle venue with a total of 37 displays providing a visual impact to the customer of breathtaking proportions.”
The sound system needed reinforcing particularly for the dance area and Utopian together with Blaydon Communications Ltd chose the KV2 Audio ES system. Blaydon’s Dave Chapman explained: “I knew the dance area needed a ‘full on’ sound system, which is what we got with the ES1.0 set up.” In specifying two ES1.0 loudspeakers together with two ES1.8 bass bins, two ES2.5 bass bins and three EPAK 2500’s to power the system, it more than fitted the bill.
The ES Series is an embodiment of KV2 Audio’s product philosophy; it is a compact and modular speaker system. The EPAK 2500 and the ES 1.0 Mid/High speaker make up the ES Series system core. The ES 1.0 includes a 1.75-inch dome compression driver, a six-inch, horn-loaded mid-range speaker and a twelve-inch horn-loaded mid-bass driver. Three modular bass units allow you to select cabinets based on system application or taste. The ES 1.8 is a high-output, front-loaded single 18-inch bass module. It provides tight, up-front, low-frequency reinforcement via a front-loaded design with large-format porting that provides improved attack and definition. The ES 2.5 is a compact, high-output bass module designed using new concepts in twin asymmetrical acoustic chambers that deliver very high speaker loading and output from a relatively small cabinet footprint.
A similar scheme was put in place for Bar 55, with once again the KV2 Audio ES system being utilised for the dance area and a Biamp Nexia to integrate the old and new systems. A slight problem did arise with the lighting upgrade; the extremely large mirror ball (probably the biggest in the North East) would not go through any of the doors! They solved the problem by the simple remedy of having the doors removed.
Utopian’s Carl Hornsby summed up both projects: “We pride ourselves on giving the customer the best experience possible in our venues, and I feel both of these meet that criteria.”
