Audio Acoustics Conference Resounding Success
The 22nd of a successful series of the Institute of Acoustics’ Reproduced Sound conferences was held at the Oxford Hotel from 3-4 November 2006.
Delegates from many parts of the world were treated to a packed agenda, with presentations on the latest in audio technology, acoustics and real world applications underlying the common theme of electro-acoustics.
The subjects ranged from acoustic measurements and comparisons of STI measurement methods to ultrasonics, including aspects of digital storage, coding and transmission. There were also papers on loudspeaker driver design and arrays, low-frequency room interactions and the design of intercom systems. Two presentations by well-known journalists/reviewers discussed the possible benefits of extended frequency response and increased resolution.
The delegates were also treated to an evening session in which different digital audio coding systems were compared at high and low bit rates. Following the formal conference dinner, the Peter Barnett Memorial Award winner, Dr. Evert Start, presented a fascinating and informative talk on the origins and development of wave-field synthesis. The talk was entitled “Making waves and catching waves” and the demonstration, involving much audience participation, effectively illustrated the creation of virtual sound sources.
The Reproduced Sound conference is organised by the Electroacoustics Group of the Institute of Acoustics. The Conference this year was organised in collaboration with AES, ABTT, APRS and ISCE.
Colin English, president of the Institute of Acoustics said: “Reproduced Sound conferences have become an institution, with the high quality content and networking opportunities bringing delegates back year after year. This year was no exception as delegates enjoyed a full and busy programme, which was entertaining at the same time as being informative and educational.”
