Peter Barnett Memorial Award
Dr Evert Start, of Duran Audio, has been awarded the Peter Barnett Memorial Award for 2006 by the Institute of Acoustics (IOA), the UK’s professional body for those working in acoustics, noise and vibration.
Evert’s contribution to the field of electro-acoustics was recognised at the IOA’s 22nd annual Reproduced Sound Conference which was held at the Oxford Hotel on 3rd and 4th November.
Inaugurated in 2001 by the Electro-acoustics Group, The Peter Barnett Memorial Award honours Peter Barnett, who died the previous year. This award recognises advancements and technical excellence in the fields of electro-acoustics, speech intelligibility, and education in acoustics & electro-acoustics and is awarded annually.
Previous winners of the award are: 2001 Dr Herman Steeneken, 2002 Dr Wolfgang Ahnert, 2003 Peter Mapp, 2004 Dr Per V Brüel and 2005 Prof James Angus.
Peter Barnett, founder of AMS Acoustics, had a wide range of interests in acoustics but primarily in the fields of electro-acoustics and speech intelligibility. A stalwart of the Reproduced Sound series of conferences, he was known for his mathematical approach to problems. Therefore, it seemed rather fitting that Evert should be recognised for work that Peter himself was so enthusiastic about.
Evert was presented with the award in recognition of his work in improving levels of speech intelligibility in highly reverberant spaces by developing mathematical algorithms that can be used in digitally controlled loudspeaker arrays. The Digital Directivity Synthesis technology that Evert has developed whilst at Duran Audio means that the directivity of loudspeaker array (regardless of its shape) can be manipulated to give any desired directivity pattern, within the physical constraints of the array.
