White Light Make Nelson Blush

White Light Make Nelson Blush

For the fourth year in succession, White Light was commissioned by the Estée Lauder companies to turn a major UK landmark pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Previous years have seen White Light’s team transform landmarks from the Royal Opera House in London to the Biomes at the Eden Project in Cornwall.

To achieve the dramatic lighting of Nelson’s Column White Light’s Simon Jones used a wide selection of equipment from White Light’s extensive rental stock, including ETC Source Fours, White Light Exhibition Uplighters, Clay Paky Alpha Wash 1200s, Studio Due Citycolour 400s, Martin Mac2000 Profiles and Vari*Lite VL2000 Washes - all controlled from an MA Lighting grandMA Lite console. The equipment was installed by a team led by Jones and production electrician Ben Cash.

The most challenging part of the project was lighting Nelson himself, perched on top of the column 165 feet above the streets of London. Fortunately the solution to the problem had been launched just a short time before at the 2006 PLASA Show. Robert Juliat’s stunning Lancelot 4kW followspot/effects projector. One Lancelot was positioned on a balcony at the Hilton Trafalgar Hotel, giving an unobstructed view of Nelson though at a considerable throw - something that didn’t present any problem at all to Lancelot’s bright, 2-5˚ beam.

The Estée Lauder Companies are responsible for introducing Breast Cancer Awareness Month and its symbol the pink ribbon to more than 40 countries globally over the past 14 years. In addition to distributing millions of pink ribbons each year the group fundraises for global breast cancer charity the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. UK funds raised for the BCRF support research at the Royal Marsden Institute of Cancer Research. Since 2000 every October the Estee Lauder companies has lit celebrated monuments throughout the world in pink light to highlight the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness. Nearly 1000 monuments have been involved including Table Mountain, Niagara Falls, the Sydney Opera House, the Tokyo Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the headquarters of the European Parliament.
